Today is the grand opening of Dreamwidth's first icon sharing community and to kick things off, we are having an iCONtest! (iCONtest: n a contest involving icons.) The winner will get 3 months of paid account time to put toward a Dreamwidth account!
iCONtest Rules
- Submit your icons by April 21st. Icons will be posted April 22nd for voting and the winner of the iCONtest will be posted on April 30th, to commemorate Dreamwidth's Open Beta Launch!
- Please keep your icons G-rated! This means no nudity, no profanity, no disturbing images, etc.
- Icons may be animated.
- Original work is preferred but artwork and stock photos may be used if proper credit is submitted along with the icon.
- You may submit multiple icons if you wish, but the winner is determined by which ICON gets the most votes, not which USER.
- Above all, have fun!
Do you want to participate but you have no Dreamwidth account? No problem! This particular iCONtest is going to be held via comments. Read on...
How To Submit Your Icon
- All comments on this entry are screened. You may comment using your OpenID or anonymously if you don't have a DW account.
- Upload your icon to a photo hosting site. (i.e. imageshack.us)
- Comment on this entry with the link, icon title, and your name. (If you have used someone else's work in your icon, please include that information as well.)
- IMPORTANT: If you are submitting anonymously, you *must* submit an email address so I can verify your submission. Also, if you would like me to "link" your icon to a LiveJournal account or other website, be sure to include that URL as well.

A question wrt both this competition and the community as a whole... I'm not a member of any icon comms on LJ or elsewhere, so this is probably naive... but can you post just to show your own icons without any intent to share them? Or do posted icons have to be available for other people to use?
It depends on the community. Some communities are for people to show off their work but *most* communities are to allow other people to use the icon.
For the contest, if you wanted to submit an icon that was not intended for redistribution, that'd be fine. (Although, I can't guarantee someone won't "steal" it...) But for submitting to the community in general, it really needs to be share-able. ;)

Is there a particular theme to this icontest? Like Dreamwidth-related icons or ... something? I might submit something, but I think I'm a little confused about what I should be designing for if I do submit one. :)
no theme! just whatever you like! you can submit as many as you like too. :)

I have to say I don't agree with linking icons to members of LJ. I think voting should be unbiased and fair and if people know who made what they will all vote for the same person. I think all entrants should be anonymous.
I wasn't clear in my entry. The linking is for AFTER the contest, if people want others to know what they made. I agree 100% that the voting should be anonymous. :) After the winner is announced, I was planning on also posting the icons with the artist info if they gave permission to do so.
